On December 20, 2007, ITC Holdings, through its ITC Midwest subsidiary, completed the acquisition of the high voltage electric power lines from Alliant Energy’s Interstate Power and Light Co. (IPL) subsidiary. The transaction involved the acquisition of approximately 6,800 miles of 34,500-volt and higher voltage transmission lines and approximately 170 transmission substations in Iowa, Minnesota, Illinois and Missouri. As a result, ITC Midwest connects more than 700 communities in Iowa, southern Minnesota and northwest Illinois, an area of nearly 54,000 square miles.
ITC Midwest is currently working to transition operations of the former IPL transmission system, while planning and initiating improvements. During the coming months, ITC Midwest will invest more than $85 million to improve the region’s transmission system.
One of the company’s priorities is working with wind farm developers in the rich wind area of southern Minnesota and northern Iowa. ITC Midwest plays a critical role connecting those wind farms to the customers who want the benefits of those clean energy sources.
